Ilya Lichtenstein, a Russian-American, was sentenced to five years in prison for stealing approximately 120,000 bitcoins from Bitfinex in 2016.
The stolen bitcoins were worth $71 million at the time and have since appreciated significantly in value.
Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, used complex laundering techniques, including fake IDs and crypto mixers, to disguise the origins of the stolen funds.
Morgan, who performed as a rapper under the alias 'Razzlekhan,' is due to be sentenced shortly after pleading guilty to money laundering.
Authorities have recovered over 96% of the stolen bitcoins, marking one of the largest financial recoveries in U.S. history.
