Bitcoin Spot ETFs Post Biggest Daily Outflow Since June

Concentrated redemptions forced issuers to sell underlying tokens, a process that can tighten spot liquidity and push short-term prices lower.

Overview

  • On Oct. 30 U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $643.2 million in net outflows, erasing four days of inflows and leaving the Oct. 26–30 week about $202.4 million in the red.
  • BlackRock’s IBIT, Fidelity’s FBTC and ARK 21Shares’ ARKB drove roughly 87.7% of the withdrawals with about $233.7 million, $201 million and $129.5 million taken out respectively.
  • U.S. spot ether funds also saw heavy selling, with $155.7 million of withdrawals on the same day that pushed October ether outflows to about $1.61 billion.
  • Because U.S. spot ETFs must buy or sell the actual tokens to meet creations and redemptions, concentrated moves by a few large funds translate into real spot trading that can worsen short-term liquidity when prices fall below the ETFs’ average purchase cost.
  • Despite the single-day losses, the ETF complex still shows large cumulative inflows since its January 2024 launch—around $57 billion—and some products such as IBIT finished the latest five-session stretch with a modest net inflow, leaving market-watchers focused on whether concentrated flows will trigger further price swings.
