Bison Futé Warns of Heavy Return Traffic From Friday, With Peak Congestion on Saturday

The national road forecaster urges travelers to shift departures using time‑specific guidance tied to the rentrée return flows.

Overview

  • From Friday 29 August, first slowdowns are expected from mid‑afternoon into early evening, with very dense conditions on the Mediterranean arc (A7, A8, A9) and on approaches to Île‑de‑France including the A10, A6 and A86.
  • Saturday 30 August is forecast as the toughest day for return travel, with heavy queues on western axes A10, A11 and A71 and in the southeast on the A7 as well as access from Italy to the Mont‑Blanc tunnel.
  • Sunday 31 August should ease overall, though slowdowns are still anticipated in the north and northeast on the A16, A25 and A13, and on the A10 and A11, with dense traffic on the A10 and A6 in Île‑de‑France from late morning through the evening.
  • Route‑ and time‑specific advice includes crossing Île‑de‑France before 10–11:00 or after late night, avoiding the A9 Narbonne–Orange during mid‑afternoon, and steering clear of the A7 Marseille–Orange and Orange–Lyon during the stated peak windows.
  • Access to the Mont‑Blanc tunnel via the N205 is singled out for long waits on Saturday, with a recommended avoidance window of roughly 10:00–19:00.
