Birmingham Man Given Life With 15-Year Minimum for Murder of His Mother

The judge described a sustained attack fuelled by alcohol plus cocaine after a dispute over a TV remote.

Overview

  • Birmingham Crown Court imposed the sentence on September 12 after Surjit Singh, 39, pleaded guilty to murdering 76-year-old Mohinder Kaur.
  • Judge Simon Drew KC said bloodstains showed a prolonged assault in which Kaur was chased through the home before being kicked and stamped on.
  • Toxicology recorded alcohol and cocaine in Singh’s system, with the court citing about 700ml of whisky, 8–10 cans of beer and two grams of cocaine consumed in the prior 24 hours.
  • Police were alerted after Singh told a relative he had attacked his mother; officers forced entry, found Kaur gravely injured, and later arrested Singh when he returned.
  • A post-mortem found multiple injuries with cause of death recorded as blunt force trauma, and prosecutors said it was unclear whether any weapon was used.
