Birmingham City Unveils 62,000-Seat 'Powerhouse' Stadium for 2030–31

The Heatherwick–Manica concept now enters public consultation, with delivery targeted for 2030–31, contingent on planning approval.

Overview

  • Designs were revealed at Digbeth Loc. Studios, with the working name The Powerhouse and Heatherwick Studio collaborating with MANICA Architecture.
  • Key features include 12 chimney-form towers that serve structure, circulation and ventilation, a movable pitch, and a retractable roof designed to close in about 20 minutes for multi-use events.
  • The venue would anchor a proposed 135-acre Sports Quarter in East Birmingham on land assembled around the former Birmingham Wheels site.
  • Chairman Tom Wagner cited a stadium cost of about £1.2bn within a wider project of at least £2.5bn, with a naming-rights deal planned.
  • Next steps involve consultations and a planning application, with delivery also tied to transport upgrades such as a pledged tram link to the city centre.
