Bird Flu Outbreak in UK Prompts Mass Poultry Cull

The H5N5 strain of avian influenza has been detected at a Yorkshire farm, leading to increased vigilance and protective measures.

The UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) confirmed the H5N5 strain at a commercial poultry farm in Hornsea, Yorkshire.
A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone have been established around the affected farm to contain the outbreak.
All birds at the infected site are to be culled as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread.
While the risk to poultry with strong biosecurity remains low, the risk level for wild birds has been raised from medium to high.
The UK Health Security Agency and Food Standards Agency assure that the risk to public health and food safety is very low, provided poultry products are properly cooked.
