Bird Flu Outbreak in UK Prompts Mass Poultry Cull

The H5N5 strain of avian influenza has been detected at a Yorkshire farm, leading to increased vigilance and protective measures.

  • The UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) confirmed the H5N5 strain at a commercial poultry farm in Hornsea, Yorkshire.
  • A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone have been established around the affected farm to contain the outbreak.
  • All birds at the infected site are to be culled as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread.
  • While the risk to poultry with strong biosecurity remains low, the risk level for wild birds has been raised from medium to high.
  • The UK Health Security Agency and Food Standards Agency assure that the risk to public health and food safety is very low, provided poultry products are properly cooked.
