  • The bird flu outbreak that began in early 2022 has been less severe this year, with fewer cases found among wild birds, but has still resulted in the culling of 8.1 million birds this year, 5.8 million of which were killed just this month.
  • Several large egg farms have been affected, including a farm in Iowa where 1.2 million birds were culled and a farm in Minnesota where 940,000 chickens were killed.
  • Iowa, the nation's largest egg producing state, has been hit the hardest in this outbreak with nearly 17.3 million birds killed. Ohio, also a top egg producing state, has seen 5.1 million birds killed due to bird flu.
  • Farmers are taking preventative measures such as requiring workers to shower and change clothes before entering barns, sanitizing trucks that enter a farm, and investing in separate sets of tools for every barn.
