Bird Flu Outbreak Confirmed in Angus, Scotland

Authorities establish restricted zones to contain the first avian flu case in Scotland since 2023.

  • Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been detected at Over Ascreavie House in Kingoldrum, Kirriemuir, Angus.
  • A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone have been implemented to restrict the movement of poultry, carcasses, eggs, and related materials.
  • This is Scotland's first confirmed bird flu case since the summer of 2023, when an outbreak led to the culling of 32,000 chickens on a farm in Aberdeenshire.
  • Public health officials assess the risk to the general public as very low, even for those with prolonged exposure to infected birds.
  • Poultry keepers are urged to remain vigilant and report any signs of disease to the Animal and Plant Health Agency immediately.
