Bird Flu Confirmed at Dutch Farms in Terschuur and Holwierde, Culling Underway

A national housing order already applies to commercial flocks.

Overview

  • The NVWA is culling about 28,000 laying hens in Terschuur and roughly 48,000 broilers in Holwierde to prevent further spread.
  • Protective 3-kilometer zones and 10-kilometer restriction zones have been established with immediate bans on transporting birds, hatching and table eggs, and on removing manure or used litter.
  • The NVWA will screen farms within 3 kilometers and conduct tracing to identify any risky movements of birds or products before the notifications.
  • Part of the 10-kilometer zone around the Holwierde outbreak extends into Germany, and German veterinary authorities are being informed.
  • Terschuur lies in a densely stocked poultry region, with four farms within 1 kilometer, 18 within 3 kilometers, and 217 within 10 kilometers of the infected site.
