Bipartisan America250 Commission Fires Trump-Appointed Director Over Alleged Security Breach and Overreach

Ariel Abergel says he was ousted for an Instagram tribute to Charlie Kirk posted without approval.

Overview

  • The congressionally created U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission said on Sept. 23 it terminated executive director Ariel Abergel.
  • In its statement, the commission cited a security breach of a social-media account, misrepresentation to seek commissioners’ resignations, and unauthorized actions on programming, finances, and communications.
  • Commission officials said they had previously removed Abergel’s control over the website and social accounts, and a spokesperson said he changed credentials to block access.
  • Abergel rejected the allegations and maintained he was punished for posting “God bless Charlie Kirk” on the America250 Instagram account without sign-off.
  • The White House praised Abergel’s work, including the Army250 parade, and the commission said it will choose a new executive director in consultation with the administration.
