Overview

  • Verivox now lists 326 household biogas offers, up from 189 in August 2023, with many designed to meet GEG’s 65% biomethane threshold.
  • Average prices for 65% biomethane tariffs hover around €0.15 per kWh, materially above conventional gas offers that are roughly €0.09–€0.11 per kWh.
  • Because fuel costs are higher for biogas, Verivox calculations show heat pumps often pay off in under ten years, with example payback periods of six to nine years in subsidized retrofits.
  • For existing buildings, the 65% renewable requirement applies to new gas installations in cities over 100,000 residents from late June 2026 and in smaller towns two years later, with minimum biogas shares rising to 15% in 2029, 30% in 2035, and 60% in 2040 before a 2045 fossil-fuel phaseout for new systems.
  • Under GEG §97, chimney sweeps must verify renewable gas usage using supplier certificates and invoices, and violations can draw penalties up to €5,000.
