Binance Investigating Suspected Hack as Billions Leave Hot Wallets

Rapid freezes by Tether and Circle have immobilized roughly $1.8–1.9 billion to limit an attacker’s on-chain options.

Overview

  • On Thursday night on-chain trackers flagged large transfers from Binance-labeled hot wallets that analysts first counted at about $2.7–2.8 billion and that some trackers later expanded as investigators traced cross-chain flows.
  • Tether and Circle moved quickly to blacklist addresses and freeze stablecoins, with Tether reporting about 1.567 billion USDT frozen and Circle reporting roughly 800 million USDC frozen, leaving about two-thirds of the reported stablecoin flows immobilized.
  • Changpeng Zhao said the activity “does look like a hack” and vowed that user funds are safe, while Binance has opened an investigation and temporarily suspended withdrawals on multiple networks as a precaution.
  • Significant amounts of non-freezable assets, including roughly 195,000 ETH and about 16,700 BTC, were part of the outflows and cannot be blocked by issuers, which leaves portions of the transfers outside issuer control and possibly unrecoverable.
  • The episode triggered sharp market moves and heavy leveraged liquidations worth hundreds of millions of dollars and now hinges on forensic tracing, official attribution, and whether Binance confirms the total loss and how it will cover any shortfall.
