Bilsthorpe War Memorial Vandalized Overnight as Police Probe and Villagers Fund Rebuild

The privately built tribute was created by Glenys and Arthur Pinnock six years ago.

Overview

  • Nottinghamshire Police opened a criminal-damage investigation into the Eakring Road memorial and asked witnesses to call 101 quoting incident 88 of 22 October or contact Crimestoppers.
  • Wooden silhouettes of soldiers were snapped, poppies were kicked over, and a framed photograph of a local veteran was damaged.
  • Veterans discovered the destruction on their way to a monthly breakfast club and residents quickly cleaned the site.
  • A JustGiving page set up by community worker Claire Stoneman raised more than £1,000 within a day to buy materials for repairs.
  • No arrests have been reported as the community plans to rebuild and continue maintaining the display.
