Overview

  • Speaking at the African Union in Addis Ababa on June 2, Gates said most of his $200 billion pledge over the next 20 years will go toward health and education programs in Africa.
  • The Gates Foundation has already invested about $100 billion on the continent and intends to sunset by 2045 after distributing virtually all of its funds.
  • He criticized cuts to USAID programs enacted under Elon Musk’s advisement as a major setback for vulnerable African communities.
  • Key focus areas include safer childbirth, the control of infectious diseases and poverty reduction through improved clinics and schools.
  • Later this week he will convene with Africa’s leading AI figures in Nigeria to explore technology-driven solutions for public health and learning.
