Overview
- On Thursday Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari urged National Assembly Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai to direct PTI lawmakers to resume work on standing committees, especially the newly formed Electoral Reforms Committee.
- The National Assembly approved the PPP motion to constitute the Electoral Reforms Committee and the PPP has asked the opposition to nominate members and submit names to the speaker’s office.
- A high-level PPP delegation led by Raja Pervez Ashraf and Syed Naveed Qamar met Achakzai to convey the invitation and Achakzai has said he will consult colleagues before giving a formal response.
- Bilawal also demanded formal briefings from the finance, foreign, defence and interior ministers on the Iran conflict, closures of key maritime routes and recent defence pacts so lawmakers can assess security and economic risks.
- PTI’s committee boycott began with resignations in August and has left parliamentary oversight limited; committees can summon officials and set reforms, so PTI participation would be the practical route to address alleged rigging and restore parliamentary scrutiny.
