Biker Dies After Motorbike Plunges Into Belapur Creek in Navi Mumbai

Police attribute the fall to a wrong turn onto a closed jetty road.

Overview

  • Rescuers pulled the pillion rider from the water after the motorcycle went off Dhruvtara Jetty in Belapur early Saturday.
  • Coastal security personnel recovered the rider’s body in the afternoon about 300 metres from the spot, according to investigating officers.
  • The deceased was identified as 23-year-old Atharva Shelke, and the rescued pillion as 23-year-old Shreyas Ashok Jhong, police said.
  • Investigators said a bag the rider was carrying may have weighed him down and hindered his efforts to stay afloat.
  • Authorities retrieved the motorcycle from the creek, and police noted a similar jetty misroute led to a vehicle entering the same creek in July.
