Bihar Voter Roll Overhaul Triggers Fresh Questions on 3.66 Lakh Final Deletions

Opposition leaders demand booth‑wise reasons for the latest deletions ahead of the ECI’s Patna meetings.

Overview

  • ECI’s final roll published on September 30 lists 7.42 crore electors, down from 7.89 crore before the Special Intensive Revision, with 21.53 lakh additions and 3.66 lakh removals at finalisation.
  • CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said the revision effectively struck off about 69 lakh names in total and sought the grounds for the 3.66 lakh purged at the last stage.
  • He warned the Opposition could return to the Supreme Court if clarifications are not provided and said the issues will be raised during the ECI’s October 4–5 visit to Patna.
  • Women were disproportionately affected, with 22.7 lakh deletions amounting to 6.28% of female electors, and Bhattacharya cited a drop in the voter sex ratio compared with pre‑SIR rolls.
  • District patterns compiled by The Quint show higher deletion rates in several Muslim‑majority areas, including Kishanganj (9.69%), Purnia (8.41%) and Katihar (7.12%), with Gopalganj near 12% and Nalanda about 3.54%.
