Bihar Roll Revision Nears Deadline as EC Flags 3 Lakh Voters, Receives 2 Lakh Removal Pleas

The Supreme Court will hear pleas on September 1 to extend the window for claims before the September 30 final list.

Overview

  • Poll authorities have issued notices to nearly three lakh draft-roll electors over 'doubtful citizenship', largely in eight border districts including East and West Champaran, Madhubani, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Araria and Supaul.
  • The Election Commission reports that 99.11% of Bihar’s 7.24 crore draft electors have submitted documents for verification in the Special Intensive Revision.
  • About 1.98 lakh individual pleas seek exclusion from the draft list, while nearly 30,000 seek inclusion, according to the Commission.
  • Booth-level agents from political parties have filed 25 inclusion claims and 103 exclusion claims, indicating relatively limited party-filed objections so far.
  • The claims-and-objections window closes September 1 and the final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on September 30, with the Court having directed acceptance of Aadhaar or any of 11 listed documents for inclusion requests.
