Bihar Placed Under Orange Alert as Rain Is Forecast Across the State

The warning raises the risk to nearly mature paddy after a weak monsoon and has prompted the state to extend diesel support for irrigation.

Overview

  • The Meteorological Department on Friday forecast rainfall for all 38 districts, issuing orange alerts for 20 districts and yellow alerts for the remaining 18.
  • Heavy showers at isolated locations and gusty winds are possible, with North Bihar flagged as higher risk and daytime temperatures expected around 28–34°C with about 93% humidity.
  • Officials say the season’s monsoon has been below normal, with roughly a dozen districts showing around a 42% rainfall deficit between June 1 and August 27, which has strained local irrigation needs.
  • Paddy sowing is about 97% complete against the state target, and the Agriculture Department began accepting diesel subsidy applications on August 17 to provide Rs 750 per acre for diesel irrigation.
  • The Disaster Management Department has urged caution and residents to follow safety advisories, while a subdued September outlook means farmers and markets will be watching rainfall and irrigation access closely for crop and yield outcomes.
