Bihar Opposition Splinters Over Seats as Deadlines Near

Overlapping nominations inside the Grand Alliance, plus breakaway bids by JMM and RLJP, make withdrawal day the next crucial test.

Overview

  • Seat-sharing in the Mahagathbandhan remains unresolved, with overlapping candidates on at least eight constituencies: Lalganj, Vaishali, Rajapakar, Rosera, Biharsharif, Bachhwara, Tarapur and Kahalgaon.
  • Jharkhand Mukti Morcha will contest six Bihar seats independently and says it will review ties after the polls, while RLJP declared it will run alone after failing to join the bloc.
  • The NDA has finalized allocations, with the BJP and JD(U) contesting 101 seats each, as partners publish candidate lists and move into campaign mode.
  • Amit Shah said the NDA will choose its chief minister after the results, prompting JD(U) to reaffirm Nitish Kumar as the alliance’s leader in the state.
  • Nomination withdrawals are due Oct 20 for phase one and Oct 23 for phase two, voting is on Nov 6 and Nov 11 with counting on Nov 14, and Jan Suraaj plans a wide contest even as Prashant Kishor does not stand.
