Bihar Floods Impact Over 1 Million as River Embankments Breach

Severe flooding in northern Bihar has led to extensive damage and displacement, with rescue operations underway as water levels begin to recede.

Close to 1 million people in 16 districts of Bihar have been affected by severe flooding caused by breached embankments of major rivers like Kosi, Bagmati, and Gandak.
The floods were triggered by unprecedented rainfall in Nepal, which led to record-high water levels in the rivers flowing into Bihar.
Government and disaster management teams, including 18 additional NDRF and SDRF teams, have been deployed for relief and rescue operations.
No casualties have been reported so far, but standing crops of paddy, maize, and vegetables have suffered extensive damage.
Calls for the construction of a high dam on the Kosi River in Nepal have resurfaced, with the central government approving ₹11,000 crore for flood mitigation projects.
