Bihar Floods Escalate as Rivers Surge, Affecting Over 1.7 Million

Over 1.7 million residents are displaced, with relief camps being readied as state agencies track rising Ganga basin water levels.

Overview

  • State officials estimate that 1.76 million people in 1,144 villages across 10 districts are affected by the floods.
  • Rivers including the Ganga, Kosi, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak, Punpun and Ghaghara have risen above danger marks after recent downpours and inflows from Nepal catchments.
  • Thirty-two teams from the NDRF and SDRF are conducting rescue operations with about 1,160 boats in flooded areas.
  • Despite recording 507.4 mm of rainfall from August 1 to 10—12% below normal—concentrated rains have driven rivers into spate, inundating hundreds of villages.
  • The state Water Resources Department has been ordered to stay on high alert, with districts preparing additional relief camps and community kitchens.
