Bihar Clears Draft Sone Water Pact With Jharkhand, Unlocking Indrapuri Reservoir Project

The move follows CWC clearance after a 2025 council meeting settled the Sone allocation between the states.

Overview

  • The cabinet approved a draft MoU for Sone river water sharing to be signed with Jharkhand, removing the key hurdle to starting the Indrapuri reservoir project.
  • Out of the 7.75 million acre-feet allocated under the 1973 Bansagar pact, Bihar will receive 5.75 MAF and Jharkhand 2.0 MAF.
  • The Indrapuri scheme is expected to strengthen irrigation across farmland in Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Patna, Gaya and Arwal.
  • The decision came after the Central Water Commission cleared the draft and after a July 2025 Eastern Regional Conference in Ranchi chaired by the Union home minister.
  • At the same meeting, Bihar approved Rs 653 crore for underground power cables in Patna, Rs 1,485 crore for 789 schools under PM SHRI, and Rs 314.20 crore for a Bihar Bhawan in Mumbai.
