Big Lots Begins Phased Reopening Under New Ownership

The discount retailer, acquired by Variety Wholesalers after its 2024 bankruptcy, will reopen nine remodeled stores on April 10, with more locations to follow in May and June.

  • Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2024 due to financial struggles driven by inflation and declining consumer spending.
  • Variety Wholesalers acquired 219 Big Lots stores and two distribution centers earlier this year as part of a strategic acquisition to revive the brand.
  • The first wave of nine store reopenings begins April 10 across six states, including Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
  • Reopened stores will feature remodeled interiors and expanded merchandise offerings, including apparel and electronics, to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Additional waves of reopenings are planned for May 1 and early June, with a grand reopening celebration scheduled for fall 2025.
