Overview
- Daniel Day scaled part of Elizabeth Tower on March 8, livestreamed the ascent while waving a Palestinian flag, removed his shoes after cutting his foot and smeared blood on the stone.
- He stayed on a ledge for about 15 hours before coming down shortly after midnight and was arrested after a fire-service cherry picker had been deployed to the scene.
- At the opening of the trial on June 8 prosecutors showed CCTV and Instagram footage and argued Day's actions caused serious disruption that closed Westminster Bridge and rerouted public transport.
- Court testimony said the incident forced police, fire and ambulance responses, halted more than 2,500 parliamentary visits and cost the taxpayer an estimated £67,000 with TfL losses put at about £25,000.
- Day denies intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and the trial is continuing as the case raises questions about protest tactics amplified by social media and the limits of legal accountability.
