Overview

  • Sunny fledged at 10:46 a.m. Monday after weeks of practice flapping and jumping on nest rails captured by the Friends of Big Bear Valley livecam.
  • The 88-day-old eaglet left the 145-foot Jeffrey pine nest where she and her sister Gizmo hatched in early March.
  • Sister Gizmo, now 84 days old, continues to prepare for her own first flight inside the nest.
  • The pair will remain near Big Bear Lake for one to three months as Jackie and Shadow teach them to fish and hunt.
  • Unbanded eaglets face tracking challenges and only about 70 percent survive their first year, according to the US Fish & Wildlife Service.
