Biden Proposes $106 Billion Aid Package for Israel and Ukraine Amid Crises
Biden's aid package, primarily for Israel and Ukraine, is aimed at demonstrating US resolve amid mounting geopolitical instability and securing alliances; however, the proposal faces political challenges within a divided Congress and amid an impending election year.
- President Biden's proposal includes around $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine to resupply troops and cover a projected government budget deficit. The US has already sent over $75 billion to Ukraine, most of which has gone toward security assistance.
- Biden's package also requests roughly $14 billion in aid for Israel. Most of this aid would be used to bolster air and missile defenses, including the Iron Dome system, as well as replenishing Defense Department military stocks provided to Israel.
- The Proposal also includes nearly $14 billion for border security operations in the US, $2 billion to counter China's influence in Asia, and roughly $9 billion for humanitarian aid for Israel, Palestine, and Ukraine collectively. However, it's not specified how much of this would go to Palestinians.
- The $106 billion proposal is anticipated to face political challenges in Congress, particularly from some Republicans who oppose further aid to Ukraine and House Democrats who disagree with allocating further military support to Israel.
- Political analysts suggest Biden's foreign policy moves could significantly impact voters' perception of him, particularly in swing states, and may play a key role in his re-election campaign for 2024.
