Funds to be used for 25 projects along the Northeast Corridor; investments are expected to create over 100,000 jobs and increase rail speeds in some sections from 30 to 110 miles per hour.
- President Biden has announced $16.4 billion in federal funding for 25 rail projects in the Northeast Corridor, expected to create over 100,000 jobs and dramatically increase rail speeds.
- The funds are part of the $1 trillion infrastructure law signed into law two years prior, which includes $66 billion slated for rail system investments.
- Among the funded projects, the largest allocation of about $4.7 billion will go towards replacing the Frederick Douglass Tunnel in Baltimore, allowing speeds to increase from 30 to 110 miles per hour.
- 12 of the 25 funded projects will be led by Amtrak, including a $2 billion allocation for the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge project in Maryland and $1.3 billion for the East River tunnel project in New York.
- The second largest allocation, $3.8 billion, will fund the Hudson River tunnel project, a part of the contentious Gateway project which experienced extensive delays and setbacks under the Trump administration.
