Biden administration reaches tentative deal with Iran to release Americans from house arrest in exchange for Iranian prisoners and access to frozen funds

  • Five Americans have been released from prison in Iran to house arrest as part of ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran.
  • In exchange, the US has agreed to release Iranians imprisoned for violating sanctions and give Iran access to $6-7 billion in frozen oil revenue funds.
  • The funds will be transferred to restricted accounts in Qatar that Iran can only access for approved humanitarian purposes.
  • If negotiations proceed as planned, the prisoner exchange and fund transfer could be completed by mid-late September.
  • While welcomed progress, negotiations remain delicate and the deal does not resolve ongoing tensions over Iran's nuclear program and regional military activities.
