Biden Administration Finalizes New Efficiency Rule for Stoves

The new standards will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 4 million metric tons over 30 years and will not affect existing stoves in people’s kitchens.

  • The Biden administration's new efficiency rule for stoves has ended the political fight over the appliance, with the new Energy Department regulation modestly tightening efficiency requirements for a small fraction of gas stoves on the market.
  • The new standards will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 4 million metric tons cumulatively over 30 years, equivalent to the combined annual emissions associated with the energy use of 500,000 households.
  • The rules will not affect the stoves in people’s kitchens or those currently on the market, and they would not instruct American families “how to cook their dinner,” as Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) put it last year.
  • Compliance with the rules will be required for newly-manufactured products starting in January 2028, and includes imported stoves.
  • The rules resemble a September deal that home appliance manufacturers reached with environmental and consumer advocates.
