Biden Administration Announces 31 Regional Tech Hubs to Boost Innovation and Job Creation
New initiative will leverage $500 million in federal funding to bolster innovation and job growth in important sectors such as semiconductors, clean energy, and artificial intelligence. The tech hubs, spread across 32 states and Puerto Rico, aim to diversify tech investment from traditional coastal hubs to small, rural, and historically underserved communities.
- President Biden and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announce the establishment of 31 Regional Innovation and Technology Hubs (Tech Hubs) across America. The hubs, authorized by the CHIPS and Science Act, are intended to spur innovation, strengthen manufacturing, and create jobs.
- Each Tech Hub aims to develop and grow innovative industries such as semiconductors, clean energy, critical minerals, biotechnology, precision medicine, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. They will compete for up to $75 million in grants to make transformative investments in these sectors.
- Private sector companies have announced over half a trillion dollars in clean energy and manufacturing investments since Biden took office, with these new Tech Hubs expected to attract further investment.
- Tech Hubs have been selected to represent the diversity of America, benefitting small, rural, and historically underserved communities. Selection was made from over 370 applications spanning 49 states and four territories.
- In addition to the 31 Tech Hubs, the Department of Commerce awarded 18 coalitions Strategy Development Grants to build economic development plans for future rounds of the Tech Hub program.
