Bhutan and Morocco Seek IIT Campuses as India Weighs Proposals

The Education Ministry says it is assessing feasibility under the NEP 2020 framework.

Ministry sources confirmed formal or informal requests from Bhutan and Morocco to host offshore Indian Institutes of Technology campuses, with no decision yet.
IIT Madras–Zanzibar and IIT Delhi–Abu Dhabi are the two operational overseas campuses, with the Abu Dhabi site currently functioning from a transit facility at Zayed University.
Discussions continue on a proposed IIT presence in Nigeria, with plans pointing to the Federal Government Academy in Suleja as the host location.
The Centre had set up a 17-member committee chaired by Dr K Radhakrishnan, which submitted recommendations in 2022 to guide overseas IIT expansions.
NEP 2020 encourages high-performing Indian universities to establish campuses abroad, providing the policy basis for evaluating new host-country requests.
