Bhopal’s MP Nagar Road Collapse Triggers Corruption Clash

Authorities have sealed the MP Nagar site and ordered repairs after a probe found soil slippage under an underlying drain.

Overview

  • On July 17, heavy monsoon rains caused an 8–9-foot-deep section of the MP Nagar main road to collapse without injuring anyone.
  • SDM Laxmikant Khare’s preliminary investigation traced the collapse to soil slippage beneath a drainage line under the pavement.
  • Officials cordoned off the 3-meter-long, 1.5-meter-wide sinkhole and issued directives for immediate repair work.
  • Congress leaders held a protest at the barricaded site, accusing the Bhopal Municipal Corporation of negligence and kickbacks in road contracts.
  • BMC chairperson Kishan Raghuvanshi argued that road failures are a natural result of heavy rains weakening asphalt surfaces.
