Böhmermann’s Berlin Exhibition Closes as One of HKW’s Most Attended

The three-week show drew heightened attention after a disputed Oct. 7 booking that he later called a mistake.

Overview

  • The Haus der Kulturen der Welt said the project ranked among its most visited exhibitions to date.
  • Titled “Die Möglichkeit der Unvernunft,” the show ran three weeks in Berlin and enforced a strict ban on mobile phones, photography and filming.
  • Installations ranged from postcards displaying hate slogans to an outdoor scene showing the Statue of Liberty’s head and arm emerging from a water basin with lines reading “Ihr habt es endlich geschafft! Ihr Verrückten! Ihr habt es vermasselt!”
  • A planned appearance by rapper Chefket on Oct. 7 drew criticism, and Jan Böhmermann later said the event should not have been scheduled for that date.
  • Coverage situates the scheduling dispute in the context of the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks in Israel that killed around 1,200 people and involved more than 250 hostages.
