Böhmermann Calls Oct. 7 Chefket Booking a Mistake as HKW Scraps Concerts

He says the date ignored Jewish sensitivities during a public exchange with Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer.

Overview

  • The planned Chefket concert at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt was canceled last week following criticism of the booking.
  • Weimer had cited photos of the rapper wearing a shirt with a Palestine map motif and said the federal government views the imagery as antisemitic, urging HKW leadership to intervene.
  • Speaking at the venue on Oct. 8, Jan Böhmermann said organizers should have considered the Jewish perspective and called the Oct. 7 timing ill‑judged.
  • All concerts linked to Böhmermann’s exhibition were subsequently called off, effectively wiping out the music portion of the program.
  • Chefket and his management had not responded to inquiries as of Wednesday, and the exhibition continues at HKW through Oct. 19.
