Bhangar Man’s Death Deepens Bengal Dispute Over Voter-List Revision

The Election Commission has not commented on claims connecting recent suicides to the Special Intensive Revision.

Overview

  • Police found Safikul Gazi, 57, dead at his in-laws’ home in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas, and his family linked his suicide to fear over identity papers after the voter-roll review began for the 2026 polls.
  • Relatives said Gazi had been distressed since a recent accident and was increasingly worried about lacking valid documents and being expelled from the country.
  • The Trinamool Congress said this is the eighth death it attributes to anxiety over the Special Intensive Revision, and party MLA Shaukat Molla visited the family.
  • The BJP rejected the allegation, calling the review a routine Election Commission exercise and accusing the TMC of politicising the deaths.
  • In a separate case last week, West Bengal police said a note by Pradeep Kar in North 24 Parganas mentioned the NRC, while independent verification of the TMC’s overall tally remains outstanding.
