Bhajan Lal Sharma Lays Foundation for Rs 647-Crore Gang Canal–Ferozepur Feeder Overhaul

The relining plan seeks to draw surplus Harike water to stabilize year-round irrigation.

Overview

  • The ceremony at Sadhuwali near Sriganganagar formally opened reconstruction of the feeder during the canal’s centenary.
  • The approved Rs 647.62 crore cost will be shared by Punjab at Rs 379.12 crore and Rajasthan at Rs 268.50 crore.
  • Works include cement-concrete lining from RD 0 to 168.230, rebuilding two head regulators, adding a new head and one cross regulator, 19 VRB/DRB structures, and three railway crossing bridges.
  • The upgrade aims to ensure reliable supply for rabi and kharif by diverting surplus from Harike Barrage to benefit about 3.14 lakh hectares in Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh.
  • The Chief Minister also raised the state sugarcane MSP by Rs 15 per quintal, setting early, medium and late varieties at Rs 416, Rs 406 and Rs 401 respectively, with project completion targeted by October 2027.
