BHA Fines Gosdens £3,000 After Ketamine Contamination Triggers Disqualifications

Traces of the veterinary anaesthetic in two Juddmonte horses were linked to cross-contamination from a groom’s off-duty use, prompting the introduction of random staff drug testing coupled with alcohol screening at Clarehaven Stables.

Overview

  • An independent British Horseracing Authority panel on July 15 fined John and Thady Gosden £3,000 for breaches of the Rules of Racing following ketamine findings in Zilfee and Morrophore.
  • Zilfee’s maiden victory at Kempton and Morrophore’s Yarmouth result were annulled after post-race urine tests revealed low-level ketamine.
  • Investigators determined that a yard worker admitted to recreational ketamine use multiple times a week, causing cross-contamination via shared equipment and tack.
  • Out-of-competition hair analyses and a July 2024 BHA inspection of the Newmarket yard detected ketamine residues in four more horses.
  • The Gosdens have since implemented random drug testing, alcohol screening for staff and strengthened hygiene protocols across the stable.
