Activists of the international environmental group Greenpeace deploy a giant banner displaying a picture of Jeff Bezos and reading "If you can rent Venice for your wedding you can pay more tax" at St Mark square in Venice on June 23, 2025.

Overview

  • The three-day wedding is set for June 24–26 with about 200 guests gathering on Jeff Bezos’s $500 million yacht, Koru, and the rented island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
  • One major event originally planned for the Scuola Grande della Misericordia has been moved to the Arsenale district because of security concerns linked to planned demonstrations.
  • Greenpeace and No Space for Bezos activists have displayed giant banners in St. Mark’s Square and on the Rialto Bridge and plan further actions such as blocking canals during the celebrations.
  • Wedding planners say they have hired former US soldiers for security, reserved only a proportionate number of water taxis, and will employ local staff to limit disruption for residents and visitors.
  • Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has welcomed the nuptials as an honor for Venice even as many locals continue to decry overtourism’s economic and social strains on the city.
