Bexar County Clears Voter Registration Backlog Ahead of Early Voting

An expanded team working extended shifts processed about 72,000 applications by the Oct. 6 cutoff.

Overview

  • Elections Administrator Michele Carew said all registrations received by the Oct. 6 deadline have been processed, preserving eligibility for the Nov. 4 election.
  • Roughly 72,000 applications were handled between Oct. 1 and Oct. 13, including about 65,000 from the Texas Department of Public Safety and 7,000 received by mail.
  • About 82 full-time, part-time, and temporary workers operated in alternating shifts from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. to clear the backlog.
  • Officials attributed the delays to the prior registration vendor going out of business during state system upgrades, with processing resuming after Bexar County integrated local street data to match precincts.
  • Early voting begins Oct. 20 and runs through Oct. 31, and commissioners have earmarked $1.5 million to bring on VR Systems as a new vendor pending a final contract.
