Beverley Knight Awards Lottery Grant, Condemns 'Abysmal' Treatment of Windrush Generation

The Wolverhampton project will document the Windrush generation’s imprint on British music.

Overview

  • Knight presented Diversity Music Community 1st with a £244,452 National Lottery Heritage Fund grant for Windrush: The Music, The Sound, The Legacy in her home city of Wolverhampton.
  • She criticised what she called failures by successive government bodies and said compensation has arrived in a “drip, drip, drip” fashion, with some victims receiving nothing.
  • Speaking as the daughter of Windrush parents, she said it is “shameful” that people are dying before wrongs are rectified.
  • The funded project will explore the Windrush generation’s impact on Wolverhampton’s music and culture from the 1950s to the 1980s and honour Caribbean-born DJs, musicians and community leaders.
  • Funding comes via The National Lottery’s Because Of You campaign, fronted by presenter Claudia Winkleman, as debate over redress persists since the scandal came to light in 2018.
