Bette Midler Serenades Colbert With ‘Lord of the Rings’ Parody, Takes Swipe at Trump

Her tribute comes as CBS plans to end The Late Show in May 2026.

Overview

  • On Tuesday’s Late Show, Midler opened by pleading “Don’t go” before thanking Colbert for nine-and-a-half years as “a voice of reason” and “honor.”
  • She performed a Wind Beneath My Wings spoof loaded with Lord of the Rings references, calling Colbert “my Frodo” and invoking the Great Eagles and Gandalf.
  • The lyrics repeatedly mocked President Donald Trump with the line “you never kissed the orange a--,” a refrain the studio audience joined.
  • Midler credited Eric Kornfeld with most of the parody’s words and said her son-in-law prompted the Tolkien theme, nodding to Colbert’s fandom.
  • She also promoted her New York Restoration Project and its Hulaween benefit during the appearance, and Colbert reminded viewers he remains on air until May.
