DeMille served in Vietnam and earned a Bronze Star before launching his writing career with his debut novel in 1978.
He wrote all his manuscripts by hand and co-authored two books with his son Alex, with whom he was working on a third.
DeMille is survived by his three children, Lauren, Alex, and James; his wife Sandra passed away in 2018.
