BEST Wet-Lease Bus Kills Mother and Son in Mumbai’s Wadala

Authorities registered charges under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, initiating a probe into the safety of BEST’s wet-lease bus operations

Overview

  • At around 3:10 pm on August 18, a BEST bus on route A-174 in Wadala struck a 38-year-old woman and her eight-year-old son near the Wadala Church bus stop.
  • The boy, Anthony Selveraj, was fatally injured when the bus’s front left tyre ran over his head and was pronounced dead at KEM Hospital at 3:40 pm.
  • His mother, Leoba Selveraj, sustained severe shoulder and leg trauma and died during treatment at Sion Hospital at 4:25 pm.
  • The vehicle was operated under a wet-lease by SMTATPL (Daga Group) with driver Bapurao Shivaji Nagbone and conductor Anil Maruti Sakhare.
  • Police have filed a case under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act as investigators examine driver training and contract oversight following a series of recent fatal BEST wet-lease bus collisions.
