Overview

• A New York ceremony at 54 Below welcomed Berns with video tributes from Paul McCartney and Van Morrison, hosted by Paul Shaffer with Berns’ children Brett and Cassandra.
• Attendees included Steve Miller and Steven Van Zandt, with performances by Cassandra Berns, Betty Harris, Mary Bridget Davies, and cast members from the musical Piece of My Heart.
• Berns wrote or co-wrote enduring hits such as Twist and Shout, Piece of My Heart, Hang On Sloopy, I Want Candy, Tell Him, Cry to Me, and Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.
• He produced classics including Under the Boardwalk and Brown Eyed Girl, having signed a young Van Morrison to his Bang Records label and later launching Shout Records.
• Berns died in 1967 at age 38 and was previously honored with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
