Overview

  • On July 29, the Senatsverwaltung für Verkehr dismantled temporary metal weight-limit signs, officially lifting the ban on vehicles over 3.5 tons in the southbound tunnel.
  • The southbound bore had been closed since November 2024 after excessive vibration and material damage forced the removal of several jet fans, undermining emergency smoke extraction.
  • Following preliminary repairs, passenger cars and other light vehicles were permitted to resume passage in December 2024.
  • A five-day outage in mid-June 2025 allowed crews to complete round-the-clock fan replacement and safety validations.
  • The tunnel under Tiergarten park provides a vital link between central Berlin and Kreuzberg, and its full reopening is set to relieve freight bottlenecks.
