Overview

  • From June 9 to June 20, the Reichstag’s west façade was transformed nightly by a light projection of the original 1995 wrapping design.
  • Organizers report that over 280,000 visitors have attended the free public display and expect attendance to exceed 350,000 by its close.
  • Christo and Jeanne-Claude first wrapped the Reichstag from June 24 to July 7, 1995, covering it with 100,000 square meters of silver fabric after 24 years of planning and debate.
  • The original project symbolized a reunified Germany, securing parliamentary approval by a vote of 292 to 223 and support from Rita Süssmuth and Willy Brandt despite opposition from Helmut Kohl, Wolfgang Schäuble and Angela Merkel.
  • Project manager Vladimir Yavachev says the anniversary events use immersive technology rather than exact replicas to honour the artists’ vision of temporal public engagement.
