Overview

  • The six-year dig at Molkenmarkt has exposed 22,000 m² of strata down to four meters, yielding roughly 700,000 artifacts in one of Germany’s largest urban excavations.
  • Discoveries include a hoard of 13th-century denarii alongside medieval leather shoes, a 14th-century bone flute and 17th-century marbles.
  • Excavations that began in 2019 will continue through late 2027, followed by housing construction from 2029 with move-ins projected for 2032.
  • Select artifacts are already showcased at the archäologisches Labor- und Ausstellungshaus Petri under the oversight of the Landesdenkmalamt Sachsen.
  • Future housing plans call for on-site archaeological windows to let residents and visitors observe the preserved historical layers.
