Overview
- Employees of a local gardening firm spotted the Bennett’s wallaby around 10 a.m. on a client’s property near the Havel, only two houses from its enclosure in Kladow.
- Spandau’s veterinary office and a Leibniz wildlife expert responded, using a blowpipe tranquilizer before a veterinarian examined the animal and found it healthy.
- The wallaby was returned to its owner, publisher Jakob Augstein, later the same day and remains under professional observation, according to officials.
- Augstein confirmed the animal is his on an RTL podcast, said it “wanted to come home,” and claimed an intruder had kicked in the enclosure door.
- Authorities and witnesses said earlier police attempts to catch the animal failed, and officials later concluded it had stayed in Kladow rather than roaming into Brandenburg.
