BerlinBitterfeld Rail Link Shut Through Dec. 13 for Major Renewal

The shutdown enables intensive renewal work aimed at stabilizing operations with a three-year construction-free window.

Overview

  • Deutsche Bahn closed the 130-kilometre Anhalter Railway section between Berlin Südkreuz and Bitterfeld until December 13.
  • Long-distance trains are being rerouted, adding roughly 45 to 60 minutes between Berlin and Leipzig or Halle.
  • Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Berlin Südkreuz are skipped by long-distance services during the works.
  • Regional lines RE3, RE4, RE8, RB24, RB32, RB33 and S-Bahn lines S2 and S8 on Bitterfeld–Lutherstadt Wittenberg are replaced by buses, with some express buses on select sections.
  • The project installs 33 new switches, repairs 59, fully renews about 100 km of track, and renovates a further 38 km.
